Hello NJACAC members! Welcome to all returning members, newly joined members, or those seeking to join.
I am honored to be serving this year as NJACAC president. We have such a wealth of diverse backgrounds, knowledge, education, and experiences within this group – like the fast paced world of college admission, we are ever growing and ever changing. As president it is my hope to take all the individual voices and channel them into a chorus of support for each other, for our profession, and for our students. Let our differences enhance what we can offer and unify us as a group that possesses strong professional support, powerful advocacy, and opportunity for all. As we enter a year of continued change with year two of PPY, year two of the Coalition Application, changes in the Common Application, changes in Naviance, uncertainty amongst our students who are undocumented, and ever changing policies at the local, national, and state level – all of which are just a small sample of the issues that face our profession – let us stand strong together ready to learn from each other in dialogue, conversation, and sharing of our expertise.
As president, I am working with an executive team to lay the framework of our three year plan. This team, comprised of both seasoned NJACAC veterans, and newly elected or appointed board members, is ready to put in the work needed to continue to provide the programs and activities you have come to expect from NJACAC. Long established programs like the Basics, College Key, Camp College and the annual conference will continue to evolve. New programs like the counselor bus tour, mentorship, and advocacy day in Trenton will continue to expand. We will continue to support regional fairs and work with NACAC on our two NJ national college fairs – one in Atlantic City and one in Secaucus. Look for the launch of our new website with an interface we hope is more eye catching and more user friendly.
I’d like to extend all an invitation to get involved. This association runs because of committed professionals who devote their time to board service, committee service, or event service. Whether you can commit time to on going service or just to one event – we want and need you! Volunteering is not only a great way to network and make professional connections – giving back is so important. One of my favorite quotes is from Michelle Obama who said “When you’ve worked hard, and done well, and walked through that door of opportunity, you do not slam it shut behind you. No, you reach back, and give other folks the same chances that helped you succeed.” Please consider becoming involved, I know you all have something to share.
In close, please know you can feel free to reach out to me at any time with questions, needs, or ideas. The best way to reach me is by email. We can certainly communicate by phone – but often which phone number is best for me depends on where I am at the time – so please email me first.
I look forward to working with all of you this year. Together we will shine!
