NJACAC Basics of College Counseling Workshop Event Organizer, 2024

My experiences above have led me to run for this current role for several reasons. Through the sessions that I've led, I've met a large portion of our membership and received feedback on what they're looking for out of their NJACAC experience and how we can better serve them. Perhaps most helpful was my time leading our 2024 Basics of College Counseling Workshop as a tri-chair, an experience which helped solidify my project management skills, relationship-building with our partners, and catering our work to prospective members of the organization. I've become someone the Association has been able to rely on when things need fixing, and now I turn my attention to tackling our pressing challenges and building up the next generation or group of NJACAC members to come into their own and lead this organization in their own rites.

    Other Professional Service

    NACAC, NYSACAC, & MnACAC, 09/2019-present
    TACRAO, member, 09/2019-05/2023

Having been to multiple conferences on the local affiliate and national levels around the country, I've been exposed to professionals from all backgrounds who have inspired me and given me a large support team to turn to for perspective and feedback. I look forward to bringing that larger perspective into the next three years.

    Service Platform

During my relatively short time with this organization, I've been a sponge soaking up as much information and perspective as I possibly can, seeking to understand where we've come from. That understanding and appreciation for NJACAC's past and the work it's taken to get where we are have led to my vision for the Association's future - a future that provides a sense of community for those in our field, delivers real value to our members, and returns to the roots of our mission and vision statements as we empower this group of counselors and admissions professionals to be the best versions of themselves personally and professionally. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had several opportunities in NJACAC that have helped me grow tremendously in a short amount of time, and now it's my turn to provide those growth opportunities to others. I've always sought to fill roles where I feel I can be the most effective and of service, and my next phase of service to this organization is as part of the presidential trio.

    Top Issues Facing NJACAC

Sense of Identity and Belonging: We need clearer paths to get involved for our current and prospective members who wonder who we are, what we do, and what their place might be. This new crowd getting involved will not only help define a sense of identity for our affiliate but also expand the collective experience and perspective from which we solve problems together.

Fiscal Responsibility: The next few years will be critical in establishing best practices to not only stay on top of current financial issues but also work to prevent future issues. I intend to prioritize best practices in budgeting, accounting, and transparency as we also work to generate new revenue sources and establish a firm financial footing to ensure our affiliate's longevity.

Communication: Speaking plainly, our communication with our general membership and within our Executive Board and Committee has suffered. Inconsistent communication leaves membership in the dark and makes it more difficult to incentivize new membership and engagement as folks struggle to understand who we are and what we do. To overcome this and facilitate greater creativity and collaboration within our leadership, I’m prioritizing consistent and clear communication both at the executive and general membership levels.

I’ve had the privilege of being an active member of NACAC, where my participation in their inaugural NEXT program has significantly strengthened my leadership skills. Additionally, I’ve built meaningful relationships as an active 'friend' of both the Bergen County School Counselors Association and the Bergen County Directors of Guidance, where I’ve had the opportunity to present at several luncheons and dinners. While I’ve often taken a more silent leadership role, the experiences I've gained from these various engagements have given me a solid foundation for my new role as Secretary for NJACAC. I believe these opportunities have shaped my ability to lead thoughtfully and effectively, and I look forward to bringing those skills to this new position.

    Service Platform

As Secretary for NJACAC, I am committed to enhancing organizational efficiency through strong record-keeping, clear communication, and collaboration. Accurate documentation is essential to ensuring transparency and accessibility for all members.

These experiences have allowed me to grow a very diverse set of professional contacts across the industry and have developed my knowledge and leadership capabilities.

    Service Platform:

NJACAC has been my professional home for most of my career. Even as I have taken other jobs, my heart has remained with this organization. It has helped me to grow and develop personally and professionally! This is my chance to give back to the affiliate I love. I wish to serve on the Executive Committee to help further integrate the voices of the larger organizational membership into the work of the committee. When I was first starting out in the organization and at my first conference, veteran members who served within the leadership of the organization encouraged my to be more involved. I am forever grateful for that advice and have tried to pay it forward. I always talk to new members about getting involved in NJACAC. I go out of my way to help disseminate useful information and institutional updates to other college representatives on the road. I think I am an excellent candidate for this position because of my service leadership attitude. I want to be able to give voice to members not on the executive committee and demonstrate that we hear them and take their concerns and their fresh ideas seriously. Outside of my career, I have served in similar at-large representative roles and have excelled at facilitating communication between central committees and the larger membership that we serve.

    Top Issues Facing NJACAC

In general, I believe that NJACAC is in an excellent spot and has benefitted from excellent leadership in recent years. I do not see big issues with its organization. However, I see this strength as the result of the iterative work of generations of elected leaders keeping the organization running and am excited to get to contribute to this great work. In particular, I have always thought NJACAC does a better job of engaging and activating young new members to get involved than most other ACAC affiliates. I am very skilled at that sort of work and will be able to contribute to the organization's continued success!

  • Current Employer and Title

    Admission Counselor - Pace University

    NJACAC Service

While I do not hold any NJACAC service as a newer member, I do intend to increase my involvement further as I acclimate to this territory. As a lifelong NJ resident, as well as my experience directly impacting state higher education policy, I feel I am well equipped at understanding the current and future needs of prospective students in NJ. I feel that I am a dedicated professional within the admission space, having received numerous recognitions for my outstanding work at my current institution. Additionally, I am willing and eager to collaborate with stakeholders both in and out of higher education to help advance the mission of NJACAC. Above all else, I hold a deep passion for higher education, the admission process, and for aiding students in their college journey. I would welcome the opportunity to serve as a voice for all of the great counselors, and would be an advocate for not only any issues they may face, but any issues that their students may face.

    Other Professional Service

Current NACAC, former NODA membership. Current experience serving on Monmouth University Board of Directors. Throughout my higher education journey, from currently working in admissions, to past experiences in housing, new student experience, and state level policy, I feel that having worked in some capacity across different sectors of higher education has given me a unique perspective on higher education affairs in the state. I am looking to be an advocate for students and professionals, while also seeing this as an opportunity to learn from great, experienced leaders within NJACAC.

    Service Platform

I am passionate about advancing equitable access to higher education and supporting students and families as they navigate the college admissions process. As a higher education administrator with experience in both policy development and student support, I understand the challenges faced by students, counselors, and institutions alike. Serving on the NJACAC Executive Committee would allow me to contribute my skills and insights to further the organization's mission of fostering professional growth, advocacy, and collaboration within the admissions and counseling community. I am eager to work with colleagues to address pressing issues, share innovative practices, and promote meaningful change in the field.

    Top Issues Facing NJACAC

    1. Equity in College Access and Affordability:
Many students, particularly those from underserved communities, face barriers to accessing and affording higher education. Addressing these inequities requires advocacy at both the state and federal levels to increase funding for need-based financial aid programs like Pell Grants and to expand initiatives that simplify the FAFSA process.
To address this, I would advocate for state policies that reduce reliance on standardized testing. Additionally, partner with organizations that support students in navigating financial aid and scholarship opportunities.

    2. Mental Health and Wellness for Students and Counselors:
The pressures of the college admissions process have escalated, impacting both students and the counselors who support them.
NJACAC can provide increased professional development on mental health support, offer resources for school counselors to address student wellness, and advocate for policies that fund mental health resources in schools. Additionally, providing virtual opportunities for counselors to discuss with one another these issues in broader more frequent general meetings.

    3. Public Awareness of the Value of Higher Education:
There is a growing skepticism about the value of a college degree, which impacts enrollment trends. To tackle this growing trend, NJACAC can launch public awareness campaigns that highlight the benefits of higher education, share student success stories, and address misconceptions about costs and outcomes.

    Top Issues Facing NJACAC

There are several critical issues NJACAC should address in the coming years. First, retention of new hires in college admission is a growing concern, as burnout and turnover can be high due to the demanding nature of the job. NJACAC could help by building out their mentorship programs to support new professionals and offering professional development focused on engagement and job satisfaction. This may include developing a Summer or Winter institute to encourage involvement and inspire long-term dedication to the profession. Another challenge is the demographic cliff, as a decline in the number of high school graduates in certain regions, especially the Northeast, is impacting college enrollment. NJACAC can help by encouraging outreach to non-traditional students, such as adult learners and transfer students, and providing training on recruitment strategies for a changing student population. They could also promote regional collaboration among colleges and high schools to identify trends and share resources. Finally, with college fairs becoming increasingly common, many schools are offering their own, leading to overlap and inefficiency. NJACAC could work with counselors to consolidate fairs on a county-wide level, reducing redundancy and ensuring that students have access to a more organized and effective events. By addressing these issues, NJACAC can continue to support its members and adapt to the changing landscape of college admissions.

    Top Issues Facing NJACAC

Secondary school counselors face many challenges, including mental health concerns, equity in college access, evolving admissions policies, and the growing role of AI in education. NJACAC has done an excellent job expanding professional development, and continuing to bring in experts will further support counselors and students. Additionally, providing AI training to help counselors understand and utilize emerging tools, partnering with mental health organizations for resources, and establishing a mentorship program for new counselors navigating the college admissions process would be valuable initiatives.
