As the summer continues to roll along, the New Jersey Association for College Admission Counseling continues to prepare for a new cycle filled with events and initiatives that are designed to develop colleagues on all sides of the desk and just as importantly, the students we work with. So in between having a little fun in the sun, we do have a few things going on in the coming weeks that we want our membership to be aware of.

Camp College returns to Caldwell University on August 1st for a two-day program designed for first-generation college-bound students from underserved areas. This overnight experience provides students with their guide to how to navigate the college admissions process. Students are led by Small Group Leaders who are school counselors, independent counselors, and/or college admissions officers. During the program, students participate in a “speed dating” style mock interview exercise, engage with college admissions officers during a panel discussion, and the program is capped off with a mini college fair. Camp College is offered to students at no cost thanks to the generosity of several sponsors.

The Basics of College Admission workshop is ready to go at Rider University on Thursday, August 9th. The workshop welcomes our new colleagues with plenty of information and resources about NJACAC and various topics, such as standardized testing, financial aid, social media in enrollment, Common App and the Coalition App, among others.

Just prior to the Basics workshop, the NJACAC Executive Board will meet for its annual Summer Retreat at Stockton University from August 6th-7th. The Summer Retreat allows association leadership, which includes the Executive Committee (Presidential Trio, Secretary, Treasurer) and the rest of our Executive Board (Secondary School Representatives, College Representatives, Delegates to the NACAC National Assembly, Chairs of our 12 Standing Committees), and Chairs of Standing Subcommittees, to plan for the upcoming academic year. From discussing fiscal policy, to short-term, and long-term planning, our Summer Retreat is designed to get our leadership on the same page so that we can provide the very best to you, our members. If there are any topics that you would like for our leadership to discuss or address, please email me at!

As we head into the latter half of the summer, please be sure to continue to enjoy your well-deserved time off with family and loved ones and while you are at it, don’t forget to renew your NJACAC Membership! Our association is nothing without you, the members! Let’s make sure to keep your membership up-to-date so we can keep you updated with anything and everything going on in our profession.

The Fall season will come upon us shortly and we will begin a stretch of various events and activities all dedicated to serve as resources to all of you and the students you work with. Our commitment to provide these resources is strengthened by the dedication you all have to our students. Let’s continue to work together to best serve our students and to also help one another grow as college admission professionals.

Continue to enjoy the sunshine!

Carlos O. Cano
NJACAC President
